Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year

December 12, 2009

Dear Friend of  SOS DRS,

Health and peace. A blessed Christmas to you and yours from all of us at SOS DRS. Many thanks from the disaster victims that you have supported so generously. We have witnessed their heartfelt gratitude.

I have good news. This year with your help some 25 Camillian priests and brothers and numerous professionals and lay people have become involved in our disaster relief mission. With this increased number of people we have been able to serve in a greater number of disasters and provide even more medical, pastoral, and humanitarian assistance. In fact, we are presently responding to four disasters in Italy, Myanmar, Kenya, and the Philippines. Check our website and blog at http://sosdrs.wordpress.com/ for more details and send us your e-mail address for updates.

Without your prayers and generous support for our neediest neighbors these disaster relief missions could not take place. Your sacrifice mirrors ours and that of Christ. It is a sign of love and mercy in the midst of suffering. And it helps to heal wounds – physical, emotional, and spiritual – and sometimes produces miracles!

We are each called to be good stewards of our time, talent, and treasure. God exhorts and also promises a reward in Matthew 25:31-46 for those who feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick, and provide shelter for the homeless. SOS DRS is responding to that call. Become an even more significant part of the mission. We need your help more than ever and so do those suffering from disasters.

On December 14th I leave for Asia where I will be joining two of our relief efforts underway in the Philippines and Myanmar. I also plan to begin a new one in Indonesia in collaboration with those responding to the earthquake that struck Padang in October. On the anniversary of the Tsunami I will return to Banda Aceh, Indonesia to revisit our efforts there.

We spent more than 1 year in this city helping many traumatized and suffering people. If you remember Banda Aceh is where we leveraged $10,000 and working together with the local Catholic parish and a community of religious sisters opened a medical clinic that over the ensuing 2 years served at least 25,000 people. We provided medical and dental care, food, and clothing and even started a credit union directed at providing money for people to start businesses.

Our dream of establishing a faith-based disaster relief organization has become a reality. God has blessed all of us, you and me. And He will bless us further when we give abundantly to the work that He is providentially doing through SOS DRS. Together we provide hope for the neediest of the needy.

Please join us as we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick, and provide shelter for the homeless through a tax-deductible gift of $25, $50, $100, $200 or more. Consider a donation in the name of your family, a relative, or friend – or in honor of a deceased loved one. Even a gift of $25.00 is significant. In Indonesia this amount bought enough rice, sugar, and oil for a family of 4 for an entire month. $50.00 paid more than half of the monthly salary of a nurse. In Kenya $100.00 would provide for the education and ministry of a person caring for the sick in the slum of Kibera for one month. I know times are difficult. But people suffering from disasters have very significant needs.

We pray for our benefactors and their intentions daily. Please continue to pray for us and all the victims of man-made and natural disasters. Thanks for responding to God’s call. May the Lord bless you for your generosity.
